The water in the bathroom sink takes forty seconds to drain instead of five, and there is a faint smell when you lean over it. Most people reach for a bottle of caustic gel at this point. You can usually unclog a slow drain without chemicals in under fifteen minutes, with tools that cost less than that bottle and will not eat into old pipes.
A slow drain is almost always a partial clog sitting within the first 30 centimetres of the plughole. That is good news, because it means you can reach it. The trick is to match the method to what is actually blocking the pipe, rather than pouring things down and hoping.
What Is Usually Causing the Slow Drain
Different rooms clog for different reasons, and knowing the likely culprit saves time.
| Drain | Usual cause | Best first tool |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom sink | Hair, toothpaste, soap scum on the pop up stopper | Remove stopper, plastic drain snake |
| Shower or bath | Hair wound with conditioner and soap | Plastic drain snake or wire hook |
| Kitchen sink | Cooking fat that hardened with food bits | Hot water, then a plunger |
| Laundry sink | Lint and fabric fibres | Clean the trap by hand |
If only one fixture drains slowly, the clog is local. If every drain in the house is sluggish, or water gurgles up in the shower when you flush the toilet, the problem is further down the main line, and that is a job for a plumber.
Step One Is to Remove the Stopper
In a bathroom sink, the pop up stopper is where most clogs live. Hair wraps around its stem and collects a grey paste of soap and toothpaste. Many stoppers lift straight out with a quarter turn. Others are held by a horizontal rod behind the sink: unscrew the small nut on the back of the drain pipe, pull the rod out a centimetre, and the stopper comes free.
Wipe it clean over a bin, not back into the basin. In about half of all bathroom sink cases, this alone fixes the problem. Put the rod back, tighten the nut by hand plus a quarter turn, and run the tap to check for drips.
How to Unclog a Slow Drain Without Chemicals Using a Drain Snake
A plastic drain snake is a thin strip with barbs along both edges, usually sold for two or three euros or pounds. It is the single most useful tool for hair clogs.
- Push the snake slowly into the drain until you feel resistance, usually 10 to 20 centimetres in.
- Twist it a few times so the barbs grab the hair.
- Pull it out steadily. Expect something unpleasant.
- Repeat until it comes out clean, then flush with a kettle of hot tap water.
A straightened wire coat hanger with a small hook bent into the end does the same job if you have nothing else. Go gently so you do not scratch the finish of the drain.
When to Use a Plunger, and How
For kitchen sinks, a cup plunger beats a snake because fat clogs are soft and spread out. The key is a seal. Fill the sink with enough water to cover the rubber cup, and if you have a double sink, block the second drain with a wet cloth or the other plug. Without that, all the pressure escapes through the neighbouring hole.
Plunge with ten to fifteen firm, straight strokes, then pull up sharply on the last one. Repeat two or three rounds. If the water drops away with a gulp, you have broken through; if it still sits there after three rounds, the clog is probably in the trap below. Pour a kettle of hot water (not boiling, for plastic pipes) afterwards to carry the loosened fat away.
Why Baking Soda and Vinegar Is Overrated
Almost every home tips list recommends baking soda followed by vinegar. It fizzes dramatically, which is satisfying, but the reaction mostly produces water, salt and carbon dioxide. It does very little to a wad of hair, and the fizz happens near the surface rather than at the clog.
It is not useless. Used weekly on a drain that already flows well, it can help shift a thin film of soap. But as a cure for a real clog, it wastes the time you could have spent with a snake. If you want a maintenance routine, a kettle of hot water once a week does a similar job for kitchen drains, and a mesh hair catcher on the shower prevents the problem altogether.
Cleaning the Trap Under the Sink
If the snake and plunger do not help, the clog is probably in the U shaped trap below the basin. Most modern traps are plastic and unscrew by hand.
- Put a bucket underneath and lay down an old towel.
- Unscrew both slip nuts on the trap, turning anticlockwise.
- Lower the trap carefully, since it will be full of water.
- Clean it out with an old toothbrush, check the rubber washers, and refit.
Hand tighten only. Overtightening cracks plastic nuts and causes the slow leaks that later lead to the musty smell and mould you find in cabinets. If damp has already crept into the bathroom, our guide on removing mould from shower caulk covers the clean up.
Keeping Drains Clear and Fly Free
A drain that stays half clogged becomes a breeding spot for small drain flies, which people often mistake for fruit flies. The film on the pipe wall is what feeds them. Clearing the clog and running hot water weekly usually ends the problem within a week. If you are seeing tiny flies in the kitchen as well, the steps in getting rid of fruit flies will help you work out which kind you have.
Prevention costs very little: a hair catcher in each shower, a sieve in the kitchen sink, and wiping greasy pans with a paper towel before washing them.
FAQ
Is it safe to pour boiling water down a drain?
For metal pipes, generally yes. For plastic PVC pipes and porcelain toilet bowls, very hot tap water or water that has cooled for a few minutes is safer, since boiling water can soften joints or crack cold porcelain.
How often should I clean a bathroom sink stopper?
Every two to three months in a household with long hair, and twice a year otherwise. It takes five minutes and prevents most slow drains from forming at all.
When should I call a plumber instead?
Call one if several drains are slow at once, if water backs up into another fixture, or if the clog returns within days of clearing it. Those signs point to a problem in the main line that hand tools cannot reach.
The Fifteen Minute Fix
Pull the stopper, run a plastic snake through, plunge if it is the kitchen, and open the trap only if those fail. Keep a two euro snake under each sink and most slow drains will never need a bottle of anything.
