The oven door is brown, the floor is crusted with old drips, and every time you preheat it the kitchen smells faintly of last month's roast. Spray cleaners work, but the fumes are harsh and you need gloves, a mask and an open window. If you clean an oven with baking soda instead, the paste does most of the work overnight while you sleep, and the next morning it wipes away with a cloth and a scraper.

This method costs under 2 pounds, takes about 30 minutes of actual effort, and is safe for most enamel ovens. Here is exactly how to do it.

What you need to clean an oven with baking soda

  • Half a cup of baking soda (bicarbonate of soda), about 120 g. A larger oven may need a full cup.
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons of warm water
  • A spray bottle of white vinegar, undiluted
  • A plastic scraper or an old bank card
  • Two cloths or sponges, one for the paste and one for rinsing
  • Rubber gloves, mainly to keep the grime off your hands
  • A bin bag or old towel to lay on the floor in front of the oven

Do not use a metal scraper or steel wool on the enamel. They leave fine scratches, and grease sticks to scratches faster than it sticks to smooth enamel.

Step by step: the overnight method

1. Empty and cool the oven

Make sure the oven is completely cold and switched off at the wall if it has a plug or isolator switch. Take out the racks, the trays and any loose thermometer. Set the racks aside for later.

2. Mix the paste

In a bowl, mix the baking soda with the water, a spoonful at a time, until it looks like spreadable icing. Too thin and it slides down the walls. Too thick and it will not stick. You want something that holds a peak on the end of a spoon.

3. Coat the inside

Spread the paste over the floor, the side walls, the back and the inside of the door with your gloved hands or a sponge. Be generous on brown and black areas, where the layer can be 2 to 3 mm thick. Avoid the heating elements, the fan cover and the door seal. The paste will turn brown as it absorbs grease. That is normal.

4. Leave it for 12 hours

Close the door and leave the paste overnight, or at least 12 hours. The baking soda is mildly alkaline, and over time it softens baked-on fat so it lets go of the enamel. Rushing this step is the most common reason the method "does not work".

5. Wipe and scrape

Next morning, use a damp cloth to wipe away as much paste as you can. Use the plastic scraper on stubborn spots, holding it at a low angle. Rinse the cloth often in warm water. Expect this to take 15 to 20 minutes.

6. Spray with vinegar

Spray vinegar over any white residue that remains. It will fizz as it reacts with the leftover baking soda, which lifts the last powdery film. Wipe again with a clean damp cloth, then switch the oven on at 100 C for 10 minutes to dry it.

Cleaning the racks and the glass door

Racks are easier in a bath or a large sink. Lay an old towel in the bottom to protect the surface, put the racks in, sprinkle half a cup of baking soda over them and pour on about a cup of vinegar. Once the fizzing stops, fill with hot water to cover and leave them overnight. Most of the grime will slide off with a scrubbing brush in the morning.

For the glass door, use the same paste but leave it for just 20 to 30 minutes. Glass is smooth and the grime releases faster. Wipe with a damp cloth and finish with a dry microfibre cloth to stop streaks. If the inside of the double glazing is dirty, the door usually unscrews or unclips. Check your manual before taking it apart.

When baking soda is not enough

A lot of online guides claim baking soda and vinegar will strip anything. They will not. Baking soda is a gentle alkali, and black carbon that has been baked on for years needs either a second round or a stronger product. Be honest with yourself about how bad the oven is before you start.

If after one overnight round you still have shiny black patches, repeat the paste on just those areas and leave it for another 12 hours. That usually removes 80 to 90 percent of what is left. If spots still refuse to move, a dedicated oven cleaner used once with the window open is a sensible choice, and the baking soda routine can keep things clean from then on.

Also skip mixing the vinegar and baking soda in a bowl beforehand and pouring the foam into the oven, a trick that is popular online. The fizz looks impressive, but it neutralises both ingredients before they ever touch the grease. Use them one after the other, never together.

Ovens you should not treat this way

  • Self-cleaning (pyrolytic) ovens. Use the built-in cleaning cycle instead. Pastes can leave residue that burns on at the very high cycle temperature.
  • Catalytic liners. These rough, matte panels absorb fat as you cook. Scrubbing them with paste can block the pores. Wipe them only with a dry cloth.
  • Exposed heating elements. Never coat them. Clean around them carefully.

Keeping it clean for longer

A thick clean once a year is far harder than a light clean every few weeks. After a messy roast, wait until the oven is just warm and wipe the floor with a damp cloth sprinkled with a little baking soda. Put a baking tray on the shelf under anything that might bubble over. Line the bottom tray with foil only if your oven manual allows it, since foil on the floor can damage some models.

The same gentle approach works across the kitchen. A bowl of lemon water handles a greasy microwave, as in our guide on how to clean a microwave with lemon in five minutes, and a similar paste lifts stains in tile lines, as shown in how to clean grout without scrubbing for hours. Frequently asked questions

How long should baking soda sit in the oven?

Leave it for at least 12 hours, ideally overnight. Shorter times only soften the top layer of grease. For very heavy build-up, a second 12 hour round on the worst spots works better than scrubbing hard.

Can I use the oven straight after cleaning with baking soda?

Yes, once all the paste and vinegar residue has been wiped away. Heat the empty oven at about 100 C for 10 minutes to dry it and burn off any faint smell. Any white powder left behind is harmless, but it can smoke slightly the first time.

Does vinegar and baking soda damage the oven?

On standard enamel ovens, no. Both are mild and safe when used one after the other and wiped off properly. Avoid using them on catalytic liners and heating elements, and use the built-in cycle on pyrolytic ovens instead.
